10 Questions with Brandon Curry

Can you compare the first Olympia to this one in November, which will be your 10th?

The first Olympia experience for me back in 2011 was truly unforgettable. I was filled with excitement and anticipation, not knowing what to expect. It was a whole new world for me, and I was just happy to be there, soaking it all in. I remember watching and observing the other competitors, learning the ropes, and hoping to do well. At that time, my main goal was to make a good impression and establish my presence in the bodybuilding world.

Fast forward to now, and I can say that I am much more comfortable and confident in my abilities. This upcoming Olympia will be my 10th, and I have a better understanding of what to expect. I have grown both physically and mentally over the years, and I know that I have what it takes to compete at the highest level. While the nerves and excitement are still there, I am more focused and determined than ever before. I am aiming to bring my absolute best package to the stage and show the world what I am capable of.

When the contest is done, what will be the first big cheat meal you get to enjoy?

Ah, the post-competition cheat meal, a well-deserved treat after months of strict dieting and training. To be honest, I don’t really have any specific favorites when it comes to cheat meals. I’m not picky at all! Whatever is closest and most convenient to get my hands on will be the first thing I devour. If there happens to be pizza or burgers backstage, you can bet I’ll be diving headfirst into them.

After that initial indulgence, it’s all about what the family wants. It could be fried foods, something sweet like ice cream or cake, or even a combination of both. The key is to celebrate and enjoy the freedom to eat something you’ve been restricting for so long. It’s a moment of pure indulgence and satisfaction.

There are 17 Mr. Olympia winners, counting you. You’ve competed against six of them. If you could stand side-by-side against one you haven’t faced before, who would it be?

If I had the opportunity to stand side-by-side against one of the Mr. Olympia winners I haven’t competed against yet, I would choose Dorian Yates. He is one of the most legendary and influential bodybuilders of all time, and it would be fascinating to see how I would measure up against him.

Dorian Yates had an incredible physique and a unique training style that revolutionized the sport. He dominated the Olympia stage in the 1990s, winning six consecutive titles. Facing him would not only be a challenge but also an incredible learning experience. Competing against someone of his caliber would push me to my limits and help me grow as an athlete.

Which one of your four children would be most likely to follow in your footsteps and compete as a bodybuilder?

Among my four children, my middle son, Marvelous, is the one who shows the most potential and interest in following in my footsteps as a bodybuilder. He surprises me with his knowledge and passion for the sport, often surprising me with his poses on stage during Dexter Jackson’s shows.

When he’s in the gym, he demonstrates incredible muscle control and form, despite having less training experience than others. Marvelous seems to have a natural affinity for bodybuilding, and it wouldn’t be too surprising if he pursued it seriously in the future. However, as a parent, I support all of my children’s aspirations and encourage them to follow their own paths.

10 Questions with Brandon Curry

Beyond the stage, do you have any athletic talent that fans may not know about?

Most fans may not know that I used to do gymnastics when I was a kid. It’s a hidden talent that might come as a surprise. I had a lot of agility and flexibility, which served me well in the sport. Even now, I can still do flips onstage during my shows, showcasing a different side of my athleticism.

However, there is a bittersweet story behind this talent. I suffered a heel fracture while attempting a flip, which forced me to stop and put an end to my gymnastics endeavors. I didn’t want to risk further injuries and jeopardize my bodybuilding career. But the memories and skills from my gymnastics days still remain and add a unique touch to my performances.

What’s your favorite body part to train, and what are some of your preferred movements?

As someone who loves training and pushing my body to the limits, it’s hard to pick just one favorite body part. However, if I had to choose, I would say back training is my ultimate favorite. The back is an intricate and complex muscle group with numerous angles and muscles to work on. It provides a great challenge and allows me to target various areas for growth and development.

When it comes to back exercises, I have a few preferred movements that I incorporate into my training routine. Pull-ups are fantastic for shoulder health and overall upper body strength. I also have a particular fondness for rows, as they help in building thickness and detail in the back muscles. If I had to single out one exercise, it would be chest supported rows. This movement allows me to achieve a deep stretch due to the support provided by the chest pad.

Do you have a favorite post-workout shake recipe?

When it comes to post-workout shakes, I like to keep it simple and effective. One of my go-to recipes involves mixing a fruity flavored whey isolate with guava juice. It provides a refreshing taste and replenishes my body with the essential protein it needs for recovery.

Another favorite post-workout shake of mine is the True Mass Hardcore in the White Chocolate flavor by Scitec Nutrition. It offers a delicious and satisfying blend of nutrients that aid in muscle repair and growth. Overall, the key is to find a high-quality protein powder that suits your taste preferences and dietary needs.

Got any secrets about training in Kuwait or give the fans some insight on what it is like out there?

Many people might assume that there is only one Oxygen Gym in Kuwait due to its reputation. However, Kuwait is a small country, and there are actually seven different locations of Oxygen Gym spread throughout. It’s interesting to hear fans and fellow athletes mention that they just left Oxygen Gym, and I have to ask them which one they are referring to.

Training in Kuwait has its own unique charm and benefits. The gym facilities are state-of-the-art, with top-notch equipment and a supportive environment for serious athletes. The atmosphere is incredibly motivating, with like-minded individuals pushing each other to new heights. The dedication and passion for bodybuilding are palpable, making it an ideal place for professional athletes to train and thrive.

Your fans know that you’re part owner of a couple of Carbon Culture gym locations. What was the biggest surprise that came with entering that component of the industry?

Entering the industry as a part owner of Carbon Culture gyms has been a rewarding and enlightening experience. One of the biggest surprises that came with this venture was the sheer amount of effort and dedication required to maintain everything. It’s not just about owning a gym and expecting it to run smoothly. There are various factors to consider, such as costs, maintenance, and ensuring a high-quality experience for members.

Running and managing a gym requires constant attention and problem-solving skills. From equipment repairs to maintaining cleanliness and creating a positive atmosphere, every aspect demands careful consideration. It has given me a newfound appreciation for all the behind-the-scenes work that goes into the fitness industry. However, it’s also been incredibly fulfilling to provide a space for others to pursue their fitness goals and make a positive impact in their lives.

Besides as one of 17 men that can call himself Mr. Olympia, how do you want fans to remember you when you decide to call it a career?

Above all, when I retire from the stage, I want to be remembered as someone who discovered his talent in bodybuilding and made the most of it. I want fans to remember me as a person who inspired and helped others along the way. My aim has always been to find a balance between my family, my personal life, and my bodybuilding career.

I hope to leave a legacy of positivity and perseverance, showing that it is possible to chase your dreams while staying grounded and humble. Regardless of the titles and accolades, my ultimate goal is to make a lasting impact on people’s lives. Through my dedication to the sport, I hope to motivate others to pursue their passions, prioritize their well-being, and achieve their goals. Bodybuilding has been my platform, but my mission extends far beyond the stage.
